It pulled $81.5M in its opening weekend, has crossed $262M worldwide, and is now officially A24's highest-grossing film ever. It drops you into the classic Level 0: endless mono-yellow rooms, damp carpet, the buzz of fluorescent lights. And it has a hook most Backrooms games don't — a risk/reward scoring loop that turns "survive the liminal space" into an actual game you can win or lose.
The twist: you score by watching the monsters
Hiding in a corner won't save you here — play it too safe and your score actively decays. The entities are your only source of points:
- Spotted — keep a monster in your sight line to earn steady points
- Chased — survive a chase for big points; the closer and longer, the more you bank
- Caught — death is brutal: you lose 800 points plus 60% of your score
So you're constantly flirting with danger — getting close enough to rack up points without getting grabbed. It's tense, replayable, and reads instantly to anyone who's watched a Backrooms video.
It's also multiplayer
